The shemagh – also called a keffiyeh and ghutrah – originated in the Middle East. It is a soft piece of woven cotton cloth, kind of like a giant heavyweight bandana. You can also think of it as a smaller (yet thicker) sarong. You may recognize it as a traditional headscarf in many Arab nations. They are a scarf-type wrap commonly found in arid regions to provide protection from direct sun exposure, as well to protect the mouth and eyes from blown dust and sand.

Shemags have practical uses for fighting and blending in, in a desert environment. Special forces soldiers (army by the way) are usually posted to blend in with the culture and the people wherever they are positioned so they would wear them to cover their head and face to blend in.
