South bridge chip is in charge of communication of I/O main line, such as PCI mainline, USB, LAN, ATA, SATA, Audio controller, keyboard controller etc. These are relatively stable, so different version of motherboard may have the same south bridge chip, the difference is the main chip, namely, north bridge chip.
